Casino`s in problemen

Sinds de algemene rookverboden in Delaware werden ingevoerd is het met de omzetten van de casino`s aldaar sterk bergafwaarts gegaan. Klanten, uit met name de buurstaten, blijven weg en de gokparadijzen zullen dit jaar een aanzienlijk lager gedeelte van de $200.000.000 belasting, die ze normaal voor de staat binnen brachten, afdragen.

“The smoking ban is the 800-pound gorilla sitting at the table here,” said Denis McGlynn, president and chief executive officer of Dover Downs Gaming and Entertainment. “It can greatly affect our ability to generate revenue for the state’s general fund.”

Mr. McGlynn contends that the revenue loss to the state from the smoking ban could be as high as $46 million a year, a loss he says the state can ill afford when lawmakers and Gov. Ruth Ann Minner are trying to close a $300 million budget deficit.
