Proeven nicotinevaccin vallen tegen

De aandelen van het Zwitserse farmaceutische concern Cytos vielen dik 3% toen afgelopen maandag de resultaten werden bekendgemaakt van de eerste zelftests met een door hun ontwikkeld nicotinevaccin. De resultaten van de tests vielen beleggers blijkbaar sterk tegen.


Ook in Nederland en andere landen is men met soortgelijke vaccin’s, die de toegang van nicotine tot de hersenen zouden blokkeren, bezig. De vraag is echter nog steeds of roken wel iets met nicotineverslaving te maken heeft. Als dat niet zo is, zoals sommige wetenschappers hebben aangetoond, dan is ook dit weer de zoveelste poging in een verkeerde richting die weinig of niets zal toevoegen aan de mogelijkheden van de farmaceutische industrie om de rokers van het roken af te brengen.


Shares in Swiss biotech company Cytos (CYTN.S: Quote, Profile, Research) fell more than 3 percent in early trade on Tuesday after data from tests of the firm’s eagerly-awaited anti-smoking vaccine fell short of the market’s expectations.

Shares in Cytos had risen over 10 percent in Friday’s session ahead of the results and there was no trading on Monday due to a market holiday in Switzerland. Shares in Cytos were trading at 50.90 francs by 0720 GMT on Tuesday.

Swiss researchers unveiled data on Saturday at a U.S. conference which showed that Cytos’s experimental vaccine against nicotine helped smokers kick the habit, with 40 percent of those tested able to quit for nearly six months after treatment.

This compared to 31 percent among the placebo group, Cytos said in a statement released at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Orlando, Florida.

“They will have to change the dosage,” a dealer said. “The conclusion is that there is some efficacy but not as much as expected.”
