Rookverbod op schepen

De Engelse regering is erg fanatiek als het om het bestrijden van roken gaat. Het rookverbod in Groot Brittannië is het meest strenge in Europa en duizenden pubs lieten al het leven.


Alsof dat allemaal nog niet genoeg is, wil men nu ook roken totaal verbieden binnen in schepen die binnen 19 km van de Engelse kust varen. De bedoeling is dat deze regel in 2009 ingaat en van toepassing is op alle schepen, onder welke vlag die ook varen.


Hoewel de Britse regering niet in staat is om de eigen economie te redden zet ze wél alles in om een minimaal probleem als het roken te tackelen. Maar ja, het is ook altijd makkelijker om uit onmacht om je ECHTE problemen op te lossen de weerloze hond trap na trap te geven. 


P&O Cruises is the latest cruise line to ban smoking inside three of its ships – the Oceana, Ventura and Artemis. Passengers will be allowed to light up only in designated outside areas or on private balconies. A spokesman said: “We do not believe we will lose passengers. We hope that becoming smoke free will [create] a more pleasant environment.”


A survey by Cruise.co.uk recently found that two thirds of respondents preferred a total ban on onboard smoking. However, a spokesman for the pro-smoking group Forest said that the move was “part of the extremist health campaigners’ agenda”.


ORGANISERS of an eight-stop bar crawl in Louisville, Kentucky, deny that they are encouraging binge drinking. The Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau has created an “Urban Bourbon” trail, with an award of a hip-flask for those who visit the city’s best whiskey bars for a drink – including the one at the Seelbach Hilton, where F. Scott Fitzgerald enjoyed a tipple while working on The Great Gatsby.


However, a spokeswoman said: “People can have soft drinks or coffees if they like. Anyway, you wouldn’t want to drink your way around the bars in a day – you could space it over a weekend.”
