Volgens de county (een soort gemeente) moeten bij de werving van nieuwe hulpsheriffs rokende kandidaten worden uitgesloten. Discriminatie tijdens deze sollicitaties is acceptabel vinden de autoriteiten omdat rokers meer ziekteverzuim vertonen en te duur zijn in de ziekteverzekering.
Het is onduidelijk welke andere gewoonten in de toekomst een baantje bij de lokale overheid zullen tegenhouden, maar volgens critici is hier sprake van een hellend vlak…
Riverside County will no longer hire prospective sheriff’s deputies who smoke, saying insurance costs have grown too steep to risk hiring smokers.
Though it’s unclear when the ban will go into effect, the decision could eventually include all of the county’s future hires, experts say.
The decision also concerned civil libertarians who called the move a “slippery slope” in public-sector employment.
“It really opens the door to other (hiring) restrictions,” said Radley Balko, a policy analyst for the Cato Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based libertarian think tank. “You could easily see this applied to other habits …. The motivating factor isn’t saving taxpayer’s money, it’s the nannyist attitude toward tobacco.”
But costs seem to be driving the supervisors’ decision.
Nearly 60 percent of the $34.9 million per year Riverside County spends in workers’ compensation claims is spent on the county’s public safety employees, said Ron Komers, the county’s director of human resources.
